Commercial Driver's License Program
Welcome to FRC’s preparatory classes designed to guide the students through the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Commercial Drivers Handbook and give participants the basic skills to obtain a Commercial Class A Driver License.
In an effort to meet local labor market demand, Feather River College is offering a Commercial Driver’s License Program to give students the opportunity to obtain their Class A license. Through a valuable collaboration with Sierra Pacific Industries, FRC will have access to one of SPI’s manual semi-truck and trailers to utilize as a training tool for students interested in a career in transportation and trucking. The program entails two classes offered during the spring semester with an emphasis on log and timber truck driving.
The courses will have a limited enrollment of 5 students to ensure that all students will get their DMV required 15 hours of individual driving time in class. The two classes are ENVR 050, the permit preparation course, and ENVR 051, the driving course. ENVR 051 will begin with a practice obstacle course at the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds, which will give students the chance to build confidence backing up and maneuvering the semi-truck and trailer before hitting the road with the instructor. Additionally, students can particpate in extra driving hours in a practical setting by driving with SPI drivers in the logging and timber transportation field. At the end of the semester, CDL Program students will have the opportunity to take their Class A Driver’s License exam at the Oroville DMV site. If they pass, they will have an unrestricted CA Class A license, and the ability to pursue a lucrative career while fulfilling a local workforce need.

When the students have passed their permit exam, they will be eligible to take ENVR 051 - Intermediate Class A Driver License Training offered in the second nine weeks of the spring semester. This course will provide students with the basic skills to obtain a Commercial Class A Driver License. Feather River College will work in partnership with Sierra Pacific Industries to provide a truck and driving instructor to ensure students will learn the safe operations, pre-operation inspections, and the components of the DMV Class A Driver’s license exam.
