Feather River Community College has been selected as a 2024 Champion for Excellence in Placement!

Quincy, CA - Feather River College (FRC) was recently informed by The Campaign for College Opportunity that it has been named a 2024 Champion for Excellence in Placement in Latinx Math Success. The Latinx Math Success award honors colleges that have excelled in ensuring a high percentage of Latinx students complete transfer-level math within one year of their initial enrollment, while also addressing racial equity gaps.

This remarkable achievement, requiring a success rate above 65%, reflects the hard work and dedication of FRC faculty and staff in fostering student achievement and equitable access to education. Feather River College offers a variety of support programs and services to students, including the Rising Scholars Program and Incarcerated Student Program (ISP). The ISP has allowed Feather River College to make a tremendous impact in the lives of incarcerated students who often struggle with education.

FRC Instructional Dean, Dr. Katie Desmond, commented on the ISP program, stating that, “FRC's Rising Scholars, Incarcerated Student Program is proud to serve a large cohort of Latinx students in state prisons and hospitals across California. We are dedicated to students’ needs, and with the growing opportunities for students to transfer to CSU baccalaureate programs in the prisons, we offer a transfer level statistics course in mathematics. This course is delivered both through traditional paper correspondence, and online through Canvas. The success of our Latinx students can be attributed to our dedicated math faculty, organized course structure, and the tutorial videos available at many prisons and to students using the Canvas learning management system.”

FRC was applauded by The Campaign for College Opportunity for leading the state in maximizing student success through the implementation of landmark equitable transfer-level course placement practices. This led to Feather River College being recognized with an Equity Designation for its exceptional commitment to ensuring more Black and/or Latinx students are succeeding in the critical transfer-level English and/or math courses that put them on a quicker path to their academic goals.

At FRC, we believe that empowering all students to succeed in transfer-level courses is key to opening doors to endless opportunities.
